Cats love having their own space that are exclusively for sleeping, relaxing, or getting away from noises or annoying situations, so they look for a distant place where they feel safe and without interruptions from other animals or humans. You can achieve this without the need for large spaces, just by adapting the places where they normally spend their time.
Elevated sites
Cats are naturally independent, and having their own space is important. It is not enough to just have a bed and a litter box in a corner. In most cases, house cats like elevated areas to be able to observe from a wider perspective their humans or other animals in the house, which is why you notice that they look for places that are above your head, such as refrigerators or shelves.
If your home does not have places of this type or they are not accessible, the most appropriate thing is to provide them with some options such as cat trees, floating shelves, or shelves that are specifically for them.Â
Elevated places provide them with a safe spot when they feel overwhelmed by situations that disrupt their routine, such as visitors, other pets, children bothering them, or very loud noises that can increase their stress level. Investing in toys with different heights and scratching posts will prevent them from climbing curtains or furniture.
